The short answer

The full End of Abyss map won't be charted until after the October 1, 2026 launch. What is confirmed: it is one interconnected underground facility with branching paths and multiple floors, the map does not auto-complete (you fill it in by scanning doors, items and enemies), and save points sit at the start or end of loops, after shortcuts and near bosses.

One interconnected facility

End of Abyss takes place in a single sprawling underground compound. It has branching paths and multiple floors, connected by ladders, stairs, elevators and shortcuts. Game Informer's previewer looked at the map and said the game has a Metroid-style map.

The store text describes a sprawling complex where pathways open as you grow stronger, letting you return to forgotten corridors. Area names and the full layout have not been published.

Area types described so far

Area typeWhat it is like
Industrial spacesMan-made metal and concrete, machinery and pipes, like a factory
Reactor areaThe demo zone: cold metal tunnels, low blue light, fungal growths
Sewer-like sectionsMentioned by the developers as part of the facility
Basement levelsDark, deeper parts where the most dangerous enemies hide

The level designer said organic growths appeared after the catastrophe at the heart of the story. Deeper areas turn the lights off, so the flashlight becomes important there.

A map you fill in yourself

Most games reveal the map as you walk. End of Abyss does the opposite. The developers said you fill out the map yourself, and the more it's filled out, the more complete your run is.

Scanning doors, items, obstacles and enemies adds icons with their details. Locked doors show what they need, such as a keycard. Collected pickups get a checkmark, and you can pin points of interest and check them off. See the Scanner guide.

Save points and safe rooms

Save points are called Save Cubes or Save Pods in previews. They sit in safe rooms, usually alongside a workbench. Resting saves your game and refills health and healing boosters, but respawns most enemies.

The level designer explained where they are placed: at the start or end of a loop, as a reward for unlocking a shortcut, at the end of a long path, and close to bosses so retries are quick. GamingTrend added that safe rooms can double as an escape from pursuing enemies.

Getting around and gated routes

Some routes are open from the start, while others need tools you get later. Previews and the developers confirm these gates:

  • Keycard-locked security doors.
  • Weak walls opened with explosives.
  • Anchor points and levers reached with the grappling hook.
  • A ladder that needs a tool to pull down.
  • A flooded pool that is drained later.

The developers also use elevators to communicate the scale of the facility. Shortcuts often open back toward save points.

  1. Scan everything you pass so it appears on the map.
  2. When stuck, look for tagged doors you haven't opened; the developers designed the map for exactly this.
  3. Check the map after every new tool or keycard.
  4. Use unchecked icons to find items you missed.
  5. Explore basements carefully with a flashlight and flares.

Key locations

The best-documented location is the reactor area, where you must activate three power cores. See power core locations. Hidden areas are covered in all secrets.

Coming after launch

After October 1, 2026, this page will add the full list of areas with their names, a complete map, and the location of every save point and workbench. We will only publish locations verified in the retail game.

Atmosphere as you go deeper

The facility gets darker and more dangerous the further down you go. The level designer said deeper parts of each area turn the lights off, and basement levels hold the most terrible enemies. Previewers describe exploration as mostly silent, with music reserved for boss fights.

Environment artist Gustav Bunse said little sunshine reaches down there, and it feels as though time has stood still. The developers also keep walls and objects from fading out around you, which keeps spaces claustrophobic.

How respawns affect routes

Resting at a save point respawns most enemies, so every route you clear can fill up again. Choosing which save point to use, and when, is part of navigating the map. Shortcuts that link back to save points make those decisions easier.

Frequently asked questions

Is End of Abyss open world?

No. It is one connected facility with branching, tool-gated paths, in the Metroidvania style.

Does the map show where to go?

Not directly. It shows what you have scanned, including locked doors and what they need, so you can work out the next step.

Can I fast travel?

Fast travel has not been confirmed. Shortcuts back to save points are the confirmed way to shorten trips.
