The short answer

End of Abyss releases on October 1, 2026, so its ending is not public yet, and the number of endings has not been announced. What is confirmed is the setup: Cel, a young combat technician separated from her team, investigates disturbances of unknown origin in an abandoned underground compound, answering a message from below that says "we are waiting for you." The cause of the disaster has not been disclosed.

The ending is not public yet

Only short press demos have been played before launch, and none reached the end of the story. Section 9 Interactive has not said how many endings there are or how they are reached. Any ending summary published before October 1, 2026 is speculation.

This page will be rewritten with a full, spoiler-marked explanation after launch. For now, it covers the confirmed story setup.

The confirmed premise

The official store text sets the scene: in the depths of a mysterious underground compound, a mission to investigate disturbances of unknown origin spirals into a harrowing descent through a broken and abandoned world. You play as Cel, a young combat technician, as she uncovers the truth behind the facility's derelict areas.

Previewers add that Cel was part of a team that descended together, but has become separated and is alone. Pixeltwelve notes that the actual cause of the disaster remains undisclosed.

The message from below

The reveal trailer shows the protagonist crossing a massive underground bridge while an eerie voice says: "To the one who hears this message, we are waiting for you." Game Informer noted that the trailer revealed little else. Who is waiting, and why, has not been explained.

What the world tells you

The store text says broken machines whisper from the depths and nothing you encounter is fully human. The level designer said the facility is man-made, and the organic growths inside it appeared after the game's central catastrophe.

The developers also said there are many connections in the facility to how our own world works. The audio team said art and sound together are meant to make you ask what this place is and what happened here, and to make clear it is not a friendly place.

How the story is told

Exposition is deliberately minimal. Co-founder Mattias Ottvall said the team wants the world to speak for itself, so players find information as they explore rather than being told. That, he said, makes the experience more rewarding.

  • Scanned documents and objects carry most of the lore.
  • Characters speak an invented language, not English, to preserve the mystery.
  • Environmental details such as organic growths hint at what happened.

Tone and inspirations

The developers name Alien, The Thing, Ghost in the Shell and Akira among their influences. Previewers describe the atmosphere as cold, quiet and oppressive. It is rated ESRB Teen for Blood and Violence.

Why we don't publish fan theories as fact

Several theories about the creatures, the facility and the title are circulating online. None has been confirmed by Section 9 Interactive or Epic, so this page does not present them. We will explain the real ending, the number of endings and how to reach each one after launch.

The big unanswered questions

The setup raises several questions that only the full game can answer. Listing them here is not speculation about the answers; it is a map of what the story has left open.

  • Who sent the message "we are waiting for you," and why?
  • What happened to the team Cel descended with?
  • What catastrophe struck the facility, and when?
  • Why is nothing in the facility fully human anymore?
  • What does restoring the reactor set in motion?

We will answer each of these with confirmed story details after launch.

Where to look for story clues

Because the developers keep exposition minimal, the story is scattered through the facility. Scan documents, terminals, desks and bodies as you explore. Watch for environmental details such as organic growths, which the level designer tied to the catastrophe.

Dark basement levels and hidden areas behind weak walls are also where the designers place secrets. See all secrets for how to find them.
