The short answer

No official playtime has been announced, and player completion data won't exist until after the October 1, 2026 launch. The developers have said the game "isn't all that short." Press demos covered about 30 minutes of one area, and respawning enemies, trial-and-error difficulty, backtracking and hidden secrets will all add time.

There is no official playtime yet

Section 9 Interactive has not published a playtime, and none of the store pages list one. Completion-time sites rely on player submissions, which cannot exist before the game launches on October 1, 2026. Any specific hour count circulating before launch is a guess.

This page will be updated with real completion times for the main story, main story plus extras, and full completion as soon as players finish the game.

What the developers said

In the official "Meet the Creators" video, a developer said the game "isn't all that short." It is the only official comment on length so far. The team also said it plays with the environment a lot, suggesting a world meant to be explored rather than rushed.

What the press demos covered

GameSpot played about 30 minutes at Summer Game Fest 2026. The demos covered a single area, the reactor section, which spans multiple floors. Even there, previewers found routes locked behind tools they did not have yet, such as a ladder and a flooded pool.

That suggests a lot of each area is left for later visits. It says little about total length, though, because the demo was a slice of one region.

Price and scope

End of Abyss costs $29.99 and comes from a studio of about nine developers. Previewers such as Mediadrop expect a focused experience rather than a 40-hour epic. Mediadrop's point was that at this price, the game does not need to be huge to be worth it.

What will add hours

Several confirmed design choices will make playtimes vary a lot between players:

  • Respawning enemies: saving or dying brings most enemies back, so routes must be cleared again.
  • Difficulty: previewers call it hard, with some trial and error, especially against bosses.
  • Backtracking: the Metroidvania structure sends you back to earlier areas with new tools.
  • Secrets: level designers deliberately hide areas and items for thorough players.
  • Map completion: the developers tie completion to how much of the map you fill in by scanning.

Full completion and achievements

The Xbox Store confirms Xbox achievements, but the list has not been published. PS5 trophy details are not available yet either. Without a list, it is impossible to say how long 100% completion will take.

The developers' comment that a fuller map means a more complete run suggests completionists will spend noticeably longer than story-focused players. See all secrets for how hidden content works.

How to avoid wasting time

  1. Scan every locked door so you know exactly where to return.
  2. Use shortcuts back to save points instead of retracing long routes.
  3. Stock up at workbenches before bosses to reduce retries.
  4. Use flares to skip fights you don't need to take.

The beginner guide has more on each of these.

How the game is paced

Pacing comes from the structure of each area. The level designers build loops that end back at a save point, with shortcuts as rewards, and put the most dangerous enemies in the deepest, darkest levels. That means progress comes in bursts: a tense push, then a shortcut home.

Save points close to bosses keep retries short. Death only costs you the distance since your last save, so difficulty adds repetition rather than lost progress.
